Slang
How you doin now – A standard greeting
or hello: used in answering the phone when you know who is on the
other end - A greeting for visiting neighbours and bumping into
people on the street.
Oh – Used as a response to the above,
or as an answer to an inquisitive question or general statement,
and can be used as a question in itself. When responded to with,
an obligatory piece of news or gossip is required to get the conversation
beyond the initial greeting.
Well - Pronounced (Waelllll) used a pre-emptive termination
of a conversation.
Example: How you doin now?
Oh?
I heard Barry bought a new tractor at the farm sale the other day.
Better than the old one I hope?
Better I’d hope then the one he got last time.
Well.
Goodbye
Orchard Tour – Use of this term between
locals here in the apple capital of Ontario relates to afternoons
and evenings, or early mornings, visiting friends in an orchard
or farm for social reasons. Orchard Tours are generally spontaneous
and can be combined with moderate to excessive consumption of booze
and laughable attempts to get work done. In some known yet undocumented
cases in the past Orchard Tours have been combined with reckless
attempts to launch wheeled vehicles over bodies of water. Be safe
and wear a helmet.
Yo – A regionally unique term for a female
sheep, otherwise known as a Ewe.
From Away - Referring to
a non-local. If your Grandparents aren’t
buried in Meaford, you are considered to be “from away”.
